Recently, I began receiving a free subscription to Opera News magazine. I'm not sure how I got on their mailing list.
In the August issue, the editors take a look at the 25 Most Powerful
Names in U.S. Opera. Among those listed are several New Yorkers,
including Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera; and James Levine, the Met's musical director.
To me, the opera feels as New York as Broadway. But even moreso than
Broadway shows, I've long considered opera performances to be the
demesne of the wealthy. It turns out that there are ways you can take
in some opera without going bankrupt.
The Juilliard School's opera
division offers free and relatively inexpensive performances. The Met
offers standing room-only tickets for as little as $15. All you need to
do is line up at the box office an hour before a performance, cash in
hand. And the New York City Opera offers half-price tickets to students.
Who wants to go to the opera?
